Description of Belleville Disc Springs

Belleville Disc-Spring Series

Ⅰ. Principle and Origin of Belleville Disc-Springs

Also known as the Belleville spring washer, the disc-spring was invented by the French engineer Belleville. It is a special conical-shaped spring bearing axial loads. Potential energy is stored after deformation under compression. When bolts get loose, the disc-spring releases stored energy to maintain clamping pressure for sealed flange joints. Its stress gradually and evenly drops from the inner bore to the outer rim, delivering powerful compensation within short compression travel.

Ⅱ. Specification Introduction for Belleville Disc-Springs

Strict technical standards apply throughout disc-spring design and manufacturing. Material selection determines overall performance. In accordance with standard GB/T 1972-2005, 60Si2MnA and 50CrVA alloy steel are preferred, thanks to outstanding mechanical property and wear resistance. Heat-resistant steel, copper alloy, titanium alloy, nickel-based and cobalt-based alloys are optional for harsh-environment operation.

Dimensional and geometric tolerances serve as core-level requirements. Critical parameters including inner diameter, outer diameter, material thickness and free height are tightly controlled for high geometric accuracy and interchangeability. Geometric tolerance guarantees stable and reliable assembly and service performance.

Ⅲ. Applications of Belleville Disc-Springs

Disc-springs are classified into two types: with and without contact bearing faces. Various load requirements can be satisfied by assembling these two types in different combinations. Single-piece installation is available, while stacked, opposed or combined spring assemblies can form spring stacks for static and alternating loads. They are ideal for heavy-duty machinery and moulds with limited mounting space yet heavy load demands.

Benefiting from unique mechanical traits and compact structure, disc-springs are widely adopted across industries: mechanical-engineering equipment, suspension assemblies, brake systems, power-generation facilities, wind-power equipment, nuclear-power valves, transformers and switchgears, precision electronic instruments, surgical devices and weapon systems.

Ⅳ. Advantages of Belleville Disc-Springs

Dependable and versatile, Belleville disc-springs are irreplaceable elastic components in modern-day engineering, especially for compact-size, high-reliability and extreme-condition scenarios. Key strengths are listed below:

  1. High load with minor deformation: superior force-to-travel ratio over ordinary springs
  2. Space-saving structure: stacked configurations greatly boost spring force or compression stroke
  3. Extended service life: capable of millions-of-cycles dynamic high-frequency loading
  4. High-temperature adaption: heat-resistant alloy material options
  5. Anti-corrosion performance: surface plating or titanium-alloy alternatives
  6. Custom-defined stiffness via stacked, opposed or mixed spring combinations
